Our team recently focused their research efforts on drive technologies and have developed several new offerings.

The first drive offering we want to explain is the new Green Premium Power Drive System®. The system achieves progressive, high-efficiency performance by pairing new technology from DanFoss variable speed drives and Brother permanent magnet motors and encoders. This combination exceeds the new standard for IE3 green energy requirements, dramatically improves operating efficiency, and considerably reduces maintenance costs. Best of all, this leading-edge approach to product handling includes a 3-year warranty.

The new Green Premium Power Drive System masterfully performs the task while generating significant energy savings. As the chart illustrates, Permanent Magnet AC Motors (PMAC) perform at least 5% more efficiently than other motors in regards to both speed and power. In fact, we conducted several tests and discovered the following: a single 1 HP motor operated at a fully-loaded state with an energy cost of roughly .10 kWh creates a savings of approximately $86 per year. We also found that running an empty conveyor on a standard induction motor creates a minimum current draw of about 70% of the nameplate’s full load amp (FLA) rating. However, when running the Brother configuration under the same conditions, the result was 40% of the nameplate’s FLA rating. That is an additional 30% savings when using the gear motor and drive combination.

The Green Premium Power Drive System also provides a wide range of operating speeds due to the Brother encoder. The system can achieve a ratio of 1000 to 1 compared to the non-closed loop package which performs at a ratio of less than 20 to 1. As a user, this means that you will not need to keep as many spare parts on-hand because one unit can cover a wider range of speeds.

Another benefit of the Green Premium Power Drive System is the sealed gearbox. First of all, because sealed gearboxes do not require oil changes, you eliminate maintenance tasks. Secondly, you can orient the motor/gearbox combination in any direction, giving you enhanced flexibility. Third, our studies show that on average, closed loop encoder units run at least 30°F cooler, and sometimes as much as 70°F cooler, compared to other units without encoders. This lower temperature equates to longer life for the units and safer conditions for your operators.

In future articles, we'll discuss the advantages of our other new offerings: Decentralized Control Systems as well as the Marathon Motor and Grove Gearbox Combination.

In the food, beverage, and
pharmaceutical industries, proper equipment cleaning and sanitation are
paramount because the stakes are high. Few players want to gamble with consumer
health, government regulations, or profit losses caused by delayed production line
start-ups, product recalls, or plant shutdowns. But how much money do you lay out on the table for sanitation costs?

There are many suitable washdown and sanitary conveyor
options that transport
products in a safe, clean manner. But selecting the correct type of
conveyor for your application is critical, especially in a large facility where
hundreds or thousands of feet of conveyor are required. The wrong choice could
cost a fortune in operating expenses.

Our new white paper,
“Create a Winning Situation with the Right Sanitary Conveyor,” profiles the design
features of sanitary conveyor and helps you determine which conveyor options
quickly pay for themselves through reduced operating costs. Learn how conveyor
features can affect the following:

A herd of bison usually roams our booth at trade shows

At the Craft Brewers Conference in Denver last month, attendees were drawn to the Arrowhead
Systems booth by the herd of bison roaming the display table. The little bison-shaped
stress relievers proved an icebreaker from which multiple inquiries
flowed.

In fact, one
particular topic of conversation came up quite often. Many attendees were of
the opinion that Arrowhead Systems “just does conveyor systems.” They were not
aware that the Arrowhead Systems family of companies encompasses so much more.

Here is a
sampling of conversations that we had with both growing and established craft
brewers:

We spoke to
an Operations Manager from a growing craft brewer who had just purchased a used
piece of equipment for his facility. As it turned out, this equipment was
built by one of our competitors. The Operations Manager needed someone to
provide a machine audit and subsequently re-install his new toy. We showed
him the capabilities of Arrowhead Systems, with a specific emphasis on A&B Engineering’s ability to install and repair our competitor’s machinery. This turned out to be a solid fit for this craft brewer’s expansion needs.

We also heard
from a well-established craft brewer who had recently purchased a new filler,
lifting their capacity from 72 bottles per minute to almost 400 bottles per
minute. The craft brewer’s operations team was concerned that their
existing depalletizer would not allow them to maximize their upgraded
capabilities, and they were not in the market for a fully automated depalletizer. We
described the full range of Busse depalletizers designed to fit his needs.
However, if he decided to purchase a used piece of equipment, A&B Engineering could assist by providing audits, repairs, relocation, and
training.

Overall,
attendees at the Craft Brewers Conference found that Arrowhead Systems is much
more than “just a conveyor company.” While Arrowhead Conveyor
manufactures a wide array of conveyor systems, Busse/SJI is a leader in

equipment relocation and installation, audits, upgrades, line controls, safety
enhancements, training, and parts. Arrowhead Systems assists you in increasing
productivity with full-scale solutions. We also take care of you with

A cam-levered roller take-up on both sides of the conveyor has been added to make cleaning or changing the belt a breeze. When the lever is in the raised position, the belt can be removed. When the lever is lowered, the cam-lever tension keeps constant pressure on the end of the conveyor, keeping the belt from slipping.
Celebrating 50 Years of Innovation

On June 1, 2013 Arrowhead Conveyor Corporation is proud to
be celebrating 50 years in manufacturing of high quality, reliable conveying equipment. We attribute our longevity to the many
talented and dedicated professionals who have brought their passion over the
years, and just as importantly the loyalty of our customers.

From our humble beginnings in the garage of founder Mr. James Steiner in 1963, to the world-wide presence Arrowhead Conveyor holds in today’s market, we've been fortunate to share our success with so many people who have made us great. Our commitment of providing our customers with exceptional products and service remains as strong as ever and will continue to grow for the next 50 years.

Our History

In 1963 James Steiner started Arrowhead Conveyor from his home garage. After years of working various jobs, he decided to start his own company and use his innovative ideas for conveyor improvements. The first customer was a Pledge can line for Johnson Wax Company (now SC Johnson). With a machine lathe and drill press the conveyor line was constructed in sections in the garage of his home.

Business soon picked up and Mr. Steiner moved the business out of the garage to an old city gas station garage. After two additions to that building he needed more space, and built the building we are currently in today.

Some of the innovations Mr. Steiner made to the conveyor industry were:

In conjunction with Rexnord, together they developed the first side flexing chain.

Developed the first side flexing conveyor.

Created the first 90° Disc Turn.

Originated the Closed Top design for conveyors.

In 1998 Arrowhead Conveyor was purchased by Arrowhead
Systems a company owned by Mr. Thomas Young. Mr. Young has a diverse background in the
material handling industry and has continued to grow and expand the Arrowhead
Conveyor brand. A&B Engineering
Services and Busse/SJI Corporation located in Randolph Wisconsin are also
companies of Arrowhead Systems along with the Priority One case palletizing
product line.

The NeXtgen II has been reapproved as Third-Party Verified from BISSC (Baking Industry Sanitation Standards Committee). BISSC is a nonprofit corporation that works closely with the American Society of Baking Z50 Committee to develop an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard for the design of bakery equipment. The ANSI standard provides a guideline for manufacturers to adhere to when designing equipment to ensure proper sanitation and food safety.

BISSC was started in 1949 to develop voluntary standards for the design and construction of bakery equipment. Those standards are the basis for what is recognized as the definitive sanitation standards used today for all equipment used in the bakery industry.

In 1966 the BISSC Office of Certification was established to easily identify equipment as conforming to BISSC standards. The Office of Certification offers two equipment certification programs to manufacturers who build their equipment to the ANSI/ASB/Z50.2-2012 Sanitation Standard for Bakery Equipment.

The first certification program is Certification. This applies to manufacturers who design and manufacture their equipment in accordance to the ANSI/ASB/Z50.2-2012 Sanitation Standard for the Design of Bakery Equipment, in turn they will be able to display the BISSC certified symbol on the equipment.

The other certification program is Third-Party Verification. Manufacturers who are already registered and certified by BISSC can request a third-party inspection by a BISSC approved independent testing agency to verify that the equipment is BISSC compliant. Once the manufacturer passes the third-party test, they can display the BISSC Verified symbol on the equipment.

The NeXtgen II patented open frame sanitary design continues the Arrowhead Conveyor tradition of high quality, user friendly and reliable equipment. This model has been Third-Party Verified by BISSC, and is an ideal conveyor for use in any sanitary food processing line where food safety is a primary concern.

The NeXtgen II Sanitary Conveyor system also offers a significant benefit by being a truly modular constructed conveyor. The conveyor elements can be easily reconfigured to meet your challenging production line changes. If your production environment can benefit from conveyors that are safe, sanitary and easy to clean, then the choice is easy – NeXtgen II – the right choice.
The NeXtgen sanitary conveyor is ideal for any processing line where food safety is the primary concern. The NeXtgen is a table top sanitary conveyor that features a patented open-frame design and continuous TIG welded seams to provide a “liquid tight” frame to prevent micro-bacterial growth in those joined areas.

With its patented open frame design, the NeXtgen offers high visibility to all of the product contact zones. The open frame design makes it easier to see any food particles and debris leftover from processing. This allows for easy-to-see clean-up and thus reduces the need for more water and detergents while contributing to a faster, easier and more effective cleaning.

Optional Product Washer

The NeXtgen is a Clean-In-Place (CIP) conveyor system free from any sharp corners and crevices where pooling can occur and micro-organisms can breed. This conveyor is ideally suited for filling lines where empty containers move into a filler. Add the optional accessory product washer to the conveyor and this accessory will clean containers as they move down the line, where any spillage is rinsed off by water spraying from the nozzles.

The Sidewinder Dynamic Laner automatically divides a single file lane of containers into multiple lanes without interrupting product flow. Arrowhead Conveyor has eliminated the need to stop product during lane shifts using a unique coiled rail system that provides superior product stability at high speeds.

The Sidewinder is designed for high speed applications. The base unit can handle a continuous flow of product without interruption at line speeds up to 215 feet per minute.

The Sidewinder Provides Superior Container Handling - The unique coiled product guides provide support for both sides of products during lane shifts. This ensures that the product will not topple or drift during the laning process.
It also allows the Sidewinder to run difficult containers at the highest possible rates.

The Sidewinder eliminates product flow interruptions caused by clamping and shifting during lane changes.

The Sidewinder is flexible; it can be configured to produce outputs from a single file to multiple lanes up to 22' across. Multiple laning sequences are possible to address individual customer needs. Changeover is fast and effective with no tools required for adjusting the product guides.

The Sidewinder can be provided as a complete unit including product conveyor or it can be provided as a stand-alone unit for retrofit on existing production lines.

The Sidewinder is easy to maintain; incorporating proven, reliable components that are selected for long life and consistent performance.

The continuous, dynamic motion of the Sidewinder eliminates the extra wear and tear caused by conveyor chain slipping under product during clamp and shift lane changes. The servo controls also provide precise motion control that eliminates ongoing adjustments common with other types of actuators.
In part two of our series on sanitary conveyors we will be talking about what sanitation is and how it relates to the design of the conveyor. Sanitation refers to conditions of the conveyor equipment that are free from particles such as filth or pathogens that could endanger public health. To make sure food remains safe during processing, appropriate sanitation programs along with the construction of the conveyor equipment must adhere to sound sanitary design principles. These principles provide a guideline so sanitary equipment can be designed to be adequately cleaned and sanitized. All surfaces of the conveyor must be able to withstand a corrosive wash down environment due to exposure from chemicals. Equipment that does not adhere to these sanitary design principles cannot be adequately cleaned and sanitized.

The main purpose for cleaning and sanitizing conveyor equipment is the complete removal of food and its byproducts from the food contact and non-food contact zones. The cleaned equipment must be able to fully drain and air dry to prevent bacteria growth. The preferred order for cleaning food contact surfaces are the following:

Rinse

Clean

Rinse

Sanitize

Equipment that’s been sanitized refers to the reduction of microorganisms levels considered to be safe for human consumption. In the rinse, clean, rinse, sanitize cycle, water accounts for nearly 95%-99% of the solution used to clean and sanitize. First, water removes food and contamination from the equipment surfaces. Next water is mixed with a detergent to clean the surface of the equipment. This solution is then rinsed from the equipment with water to allow for the final step of sanitization. Sanitization can be generalized into two categories, thermal and chemical. Thermal sanitization involves the use of hot water or steam on equipment surfaces for a specific period of time to kill microorganisms. Chemical sanitization involves the use of chemicals to clean surfaces at a specific period of time.

Sanitary equipment must be able to with stand not only food and its corrosive properties but also the chemicals that are used to clean the equipment. The American Meat Institute’s (AMI) 10 Principles of Sanitary Design provides advanced sanitary design guidelines under a general standard. These principles can be easily adapted to other food related industries as well.

Conveyor equipment that abides by the AMI’s 10 Principles of Sanitary Design must follow a rigid format in designing the conveyor. The construction and materials of the conveyor must have all food contact surfaces smooth, free of cracks and crevices, nonporous, nonabsorbent, non-contaminating, nonreactive, corrosion resistant, cleanable, with all connecting surfaces flush and continuous.

An array of diverse materials are present in the construction of sanitary conveyors. Each conveyor can have different levels of sanitation requirements for food handling purposes. Therefore, sanitary conveyors can be tailored to an individual food product line while still retaining characteristics of a similar conveyor design. Depending on the application needed, a variety of metals and non metals are used in the construction of the conveyors.

Stainless steel is the preferred metal of choice when constructing sanitary conveyor. Stainless steel has the benefits of cost effectiveness, durability and has a high resistance to corrosion. Not all Stainless steel is created equally though. Stainless steel is rated on its alloy properties and how it relates to the composition of chromium and nickel levels. Corrosion resistance differs with the amount of chromium used in the stainless steel. While structural strength of the stainless steel is affected by the amount of nickel present.
Other acceptable metals that can be used for sanitary conveyor equipment are:

Titanium

Platinum

Gold

Copper

Aluminum

Depending on the level of sanitation required conveyor equipment can be designed as either clean-in-place (CIP) or clean-out-of-place (COP). With a CIP type conveyor system all of its components must be designed to be cleaned without any disassembly, while not allowing any pathogens to integrate back into the food supply chain. The advantage of CIP systems is it allows for faster cleaning and less chemical usage. Clean-out-of-place conveyor systems allow for disassembly of key component parts to be removed from the conveyor and taken to a separate wash down area. The key advantage of COP systems are food product can be easily detected and therefore easily removed.

In food processing facilities there can be many different unique sanitary conveyor requirements dependent on the food being processed to the conditions of the facility. A well designed conveyor that follows the guidelines put forth by government agencies will help reduce the outbreak of food borne illnesses. Along with proper sanitation procedures, plant managers can safely and reliably keep consumers safe.

Arrowhead Systems sanitary line of conveyor, NeXtconveyor, offers three distinct tiers of sanitation classifications dependent on processing need. By establishing these classifications customers can easily determine what type of conveying system they will need and know that it will meet government standards.

Our NeXtgen Sanitary Conveyor is a table top conveyor that features an open-frame design, constructed from 304 Stainless Steel, and is our base sanitary modular conveyor. The NeXtgen II is our mat top sanitary conveyor that also features the patented open-frame design and is fully 304 Stainless Steel constructed. Busse/SJI is introducing their new Row Stripper. The Row Stripper is designed to single file a group of non-round containers while they are being depalletized. Visit our booth and watch the Row Stripper take single- filed containers from a conveyor and form those containers into a pattern of rows for palletizing purposes. Once the containers are formed into rows, the equipment will strip out each row, and deliver the containers back to the conveyor in a single file.
